In the beginning…
Where did it all start? . .
Well I suppose I should take responsibility for this one! I have been following the Race around Ireland for years now. I always looked forward to heading off up Mt. Leinster, both day and night, to cheer on the teams and individuals as they made their way around. In particular there was always an admiration for the solo competitors who were in the depths of exhaustion by the time they got to our neck of the woods. I even declared one night on arriving home, after seeing one rider in a bad way, that if I every suggested doing the race, my family had permission to break my legs!! But still it lingered in the back of my mind.
So in late 2017 and with my 45th Birthday looming in 2018, I finally decided that I was either doing the Ultra Challenge as a solo entrant or better again, if I could get a few more mad lads we could enter a team, so I put a message out on Viber and waited for the reaction. It was mostly a flat NO!!, NO WAY!!, some even said no thanks, some used other words.. and then on the day before the entries opened, I got a message from Frank: “I might be interested, but I need to get this hip checked first”, so with a bit of chat over and back, it was decided that if the hip said yes, we would go for it!
Entries opened and still the hip hadn’t answered. Me being impatient as usual I panicked when I saw solo entries had sold out and after a few weeks of harassment of Frank and his hip, I pulled the trigger and entered us. A couple of weeks later, the hip finally said YES and the plans for Team “Can’t Do Hills” started. Whether we’ll live up to the name will be revealed in August, but there is no turning back now.
